FROSHANITY

Next week is going to be crazy, lot’s o’ stuff happening.  Lot’s o’ chances to come see me perform.  We (my band and I) have been hard at work refining the set, adding new songs and making a show that is sure to provoke a strong like/dislike from you, the audience.  Please come judge/love me.

On thursday we drive out to play Luminata at the University of Ottawa orientation.  Also on the bill is Mother Mother and the “steam-punk” circus collective presentation thing Lucient Dossier.  We are going to be clad in costumes provided by the Theatre Department and after the show WATCH OUT young girls, my band mates will be on the loose to seduce you and party down…

The next morning we wake up early to drive back to Toronto, because one University Frosh concert is not enough for us… no sir! We are playing with Zeus and Chromeo for U of T orientation concert.  I have to say I am particularly nervous/excited about this show because:

a) CHROMEO! Are you kidding me!? Are you kidding meee?!! Woman friend is one of the best songs.  I always play it in the car when I drop Baby Girl off after rehearsals.  It’s the shit…

b) I googled my name with Chromeo and Zeus and this is the first thing that came up was a student forum of U of T students with comments such as:

“Who the f*ck are those people?
Its official, UTSU is useless.”

“you’re not serious are you?
TELL ME YOU’RE NOT SERIOUS”

“OMG, is it the Allie Hughes who sang on How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria ?!”
Her music is not even dancable.

and my personal favourite….

“Yea i know i just realized. fu*king uoft pulling this crap. all they had to do was get one decent bad instead of 3 sh!tty ones. IMAGE IF WE GOT SAM ROBERTS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN WORTH PAYING A crap LOAD FOR TUITION AND REZ f*ck”

So I guess there might be some haters in the audience.

That day I am also a participant in Henri Faberge’s marching band at U of T orientation.  I am playing a none march-able instrument so I think the plan is for me to be in a wheelchair..  ALSO that night is the return of Loving in the Name Of! Very exciting, I’ll be singing some backups there…

On Saturday I am opening for Finnish/French duo THe Do at the Mod Club next.  Fate brought us together….sort of.  I was struggling to write my bio for my download page so Jo at Musebox sent me an example of a well written bio for another band she was working with… The Do.  As soon as I opened the page I was totally taken with the music and the unique voice of the Olivia Merilahti.  Soon after I found out we’d been pitched to open for them for their Toronto show…. I guess this story is kind of boring…. NOT FOR ME!  I am really thrilled to be playing with them.  And there may or may not be a guest star joining our set from Sweet Thing .  Oooooh

Hope to see you there

Buy This Album SWEET THING

Just a shout out for a great band full of lil’ cuties who are recent friends of mine:  SWEET THING . They are going to be big. Their debut album is being released tomorrow with EMI Music Canada and their release party is Wednesday night at  The Mod Club.  They’ll be on at 10:00 pm so don’t be late.

And after they’re set you’ll have just enough time to come see me play as part of the Bicycle Film Fest opening party at 11:45 at Parts and Labour.  How does that sound?  We’ll be playing with a special guest bass player Mitch Derosier (Born Ruffians)!

Finally Joining the Circus

Got word this week that we are booked for two frosh gigs.  One is at Ottawa University opening for…… a circus.  It’s a touring cirque du soleil sort of thing called Lucient Dossier and is described as ”high-concept, steampunk-meets-neotribal performance ensemble”.  I like the word steampunk.   Also playing on this circus bill is Mother Mother. It’s not for sure but I think we are getting sponsorship from Malabar in Ottawa who will help us play our set clad in whatever gettupz we wish.  I am thinking….

Any other ideas?

All in all a good time I would say.

Also playing for the University of Toronto orientation thanks to a lover in the student union.  A lover who also took some iphone videos of our summerworks show last week.

huzzzzzzah!

Sick Summerworks Sandwiches

Well today I felt sick so I slept and sat in front of a computer (this computer) all day.  I use overuse brackets I think.   I like to point out things that I do that are potentially annoying or wrong before anyone else does.

I went through my gmail inbox and filed away all the content into different labels like “Old MP3′s” or “Theatre Stuff” or “Stuff that might come in handy some day” or “Finances” or “Catering”.  It made me nostalgic to go through everything from the past year, but I seem to like making myself feel nostalgic.  Now I only have 36 emails in my inbox which is pretty gaymazing.

This week summerworks festival started.  We performed  in the Performance Bar while the Hidden Camera’s were on the main stage.  Hosted by the actually good improv group National Theatre of the World and also some performance art my Zeesy Powers my ex (web designer). haha.  It was a weird and unique experience for me, where my old world of theatre people collided with my new world of music making.

Here is a picture of me and Zeesy with the National Theatre of the World

Yesterday I was in the studio with a new song.  It’s the one I co-wrote with Ron Sexsmith.  I am pretty jazzed about it.

I recorded it with these European club hit producers, Adame Kinge and Lesee Coopere.  They even let me get their starbucks and falafel sandwiches for them.

WEEN

I was at the Ween concert last night at Koolhaus.  Oh boy.  Holy Schnikees.  What an experience.  In my mind now it’s a 3 hour smokey haze of  thrashing, moshing, hugging, dampness sweat and condensation dripping laughing screaming.  But we made it through.

In other cool news, I co wrote a song with Ron Sexsmith yesterday.  Going to take it to the studio next week…  We may have a hit on our hands here- In our hands? On our hands? …  Also check out this video of me and friends performing at Musebox NXNE showcase in Trinity Bellwoods park.

BIGGISH KIDS

“Biggish Kids” is a song cycle that’ll be premiering at this year’s Summerworks festival, as part of the brand-new Musical Works in Concert series.
It’s a group of songs about growing up, cultivating the right social graces, and the weird intersections of real-life interpersonal tough spots with their representations in pop culture.

It’s going to be sick.  Bram Gielen is like a young motha fuckin Sondheim.  Seriously. And I’m singing in it.
